Where's the cake? Why is the DJ late? Are there enough chairs for the guests?

If these are questions you want to avoid when planning your wedding reception, you might want to give Lisa Schulz from Posh Parties by Lisa a call. With years of party planning experience under her svelte belt, she knows what works . . . and what doesn't.

Her number one piece of advice: Don't try to please everyone.

“It's about the two of you and your personalities,” Schulz said. And for couples with pushy parents, she reminds them that “your parents already had their wedding.”

Another way to avoid stress when planning a reception is to come up with a solid budget and guest count right from the get-go. Those two figures determine practically everything about the event, especially if the couple has to be frugal, Schulz said.

For the couples who have to watch their wallets, using food stations instead of a buffet table or a sit-down meal is one of the easiest ways to cut costs.

“I swear by food stations,” Schulz said. “You save a ton of money, there's more variety, the food is better, and it breaks the room up. It's more bang for your buck!”

One of the easiest ways for couples to save money is to pick and choose what about the event is important to them. Often it's just the guests who make the day special.

“The best kinds of receptions are the ones where people are not wrapped up in the aesthetics, and it's more about the people,” Schulz said. “People react off the birde and groom. You have to enjoy the reception in order for your guests to.”

Posh Parties by Lisa offers full, partial and day-of coordination. And Schulz is up for all kinds of challenges, from planning an entire wedding in three months to making magic in an unconventional venue.

Lisa Schulz coordinates weddings and many other kinds of parties in Middleburg, Winchester, Frederick, Ashburn, Warrenton and other locations in Northern Virginia.
